catch 22.
walking through the city, soaking up the 60s breeze in february, bumping shoulders with strangers, with some potential addresses in hand yet no set agenda, allowed me time to just think. strolling to soho over some fresh squeezed carrot apple juice brought my mind to a state of settlement, and my reflections are as follows: when all is said and done, fashion is not only an art but a way of life. it can be the crux of first impression identities…it can hold mighty power and an array of affluent influence. but as much as walking masterpieces, breathtaking fabrics, and rejuvenated silhouettes thrill my soul, i consistently find myself leaving this sartorial overload of a week craving simplicity. family. familiar friends. sweet potatoes and kale chips. yoga class. my routine.to clear my jumbled perceptions, it's not the colors, the trends, or the exciting experiences that make me wish for an escape, but rather it stems from the internal realization that the foundation of fashion is cyclical; it is not an end. the fact that it is always on the fly makes it oh-so-exhilarating and un-boring, yet makes me need what i know and love to be stable. yes, i go crazy over a good shirt, but a marvelous experience always leaves a much more valuable mark; it's what makes life so rich. i guess that's the two sided story. the positive and negative. the catch 22. the beauty and the fleeting fascination. and both sides of the spectrum allow me to adore fashion to the core, keeping in mind the reality of its essence, and embracing what will always be home.photo: knight cat
nyfw day 8.
yigal azrouel opened up the morning in lincoln center. it is always one of my most preferred shows to attend as it consistently remains right on target with divulging trends while staying true to its identity. the pops of tangerine and bubble gum pink cropped cigarette trousers were to die for as they were perfectly toned down with neutral accents. up next: douglas hannant at the plaza hotel. the show was gorgeous (not my style, but stunning non-the-less), hence the crowd of upper west side women…always makes for entertaining people watching.jeremy scott, held at the edgy, downtown-y milk studios in the heart of the meatpacking district found itself next on the schedule. the crowd here is so hipster. i love it. the show was pure insanity, showing barbie-esque hot pink outifts, rainbow-dyed high pig tails, and superman ensembles with glitter, capes, and all. sat next to bryanboy, and kayne west was a few seats down from there. he apparently is a big fan! major score: exclusive jeremy scott longchamp bags. so darn cute. oh, and i got a bright yellow lightning bolt swatch watch? oh my heavens.whole foods and writing takes me into the night. i can hardly believe tomorrow concludes this sartorial season!andrej.
nyfw day 7.
before i begin, i would just like to note that i am absolutely adoring the wide leg trousers and long hemlines this season. such a fresh turn from skinnies and minis!! so, the lovely february 15 began with a trip to silvercup studios to interview gossip girl's costume designer, eric daman. how i miss taking the Q train all the way to queensboro plaza! it is always a treat to visit my sweet friends in wardrobe; they all hold such a special place in my heart. some pro filmers (i like to call them), alex and aaron craig joined me and shannon on the excursion, and we had a grand time. we left with some rockin footage, and we might have filmed a scene on set? the spontaneity that occurs in this city is beyond me, and i can't get enough.shannon and i subwayed it down to soho to meet her mom and aunt at mercer kitchen: one of my favorite spots tucked underground on prince street. the atmosphere is pure bliss, and the mercer burger was so scrumptious. with an hour to spare, i made my way across town to the marc by marc jacobs show. i found myself in gramercy (my old neighborhood), reminiscing on some of my greatest memories, all the while scouting out some new spots to call my favorite. i stumbled upon 'my way coffee', and my heart melted by its charm. it was a narrow little place with an organic feel. it has officially made my master nyc list.garance dore, the sartorialist, and anna dello russo chatting it up before the show.i arrived to a bustling crowd of fascinating people! the collection was too much fun--patterns bursted with spunky colors, and chunky wedge booties kept hemlines from dragging on the floor. SPOTTED: a slew of bloggers, anna dello russo in a gold fringe leather coat, and bryanboy (gotta love him). the most exhilarating part: two of my all time favorite up and comers walked--arizona muse and lindsey wixon. sheer amazingness. i met susie bubble on my way out, and watched the sartorialist work his magic on the street.on my way to topshop…aka the store that has a frequent place in my dreams. this could have been dangerous, but i left with nothing in hand. now that is a miracle. off to enjoy the new york city ballet with shannon. these shows are so stunningly graceful and always a delight. what a wonderful and calming end to a joyfully hectic day. au revoir!to watch the finale of marc by marc jacobs, go here: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAZb07d3Mc8&w=480&h=390]
nyfw day 6.
happy valentines day! my. favorite. holiday. i watched the sunrise on this gorgeous no-jacket kind of day. the top of the morning in nyc might be my most adored time of the city. a new start for everyone; back to life, back to an exciting reality. my first valentines date of the day was with terry! we had a great lunch at rosa mexicana: it's becoming tradition (and one of my most anticipated times). A-mazing food. homemade guacamole. great girl time.i headed straight to woolrich after this scrumptious meal, interviewed the designer, and soaked in the fantastic fabrics and monochrome color palette. it was a treat to say the least. up next? zang toi showroom to interview this genius of an artist, and play dress up!!! i succumbed to his instructions to pick out some dresses and try them on. i am in a dream? off to the alice+olivia presentation with shannon. the scene was festively full of love, sequin pants, and everything pretty. not to mention, a rockin dj, trays of godiva heart chocolates, and mini cupcakes! walked home in a snowy central park made for some great reflection.just when i thought the day reached it's full enchantment potential, the ladies (shannon, her mom, her aunt, abby, and i) went out on the best date to this charming italian restaurant, where love was in the air. never a dull moment with this group! balloons covered the ceiling, the servers were in the most lovely of moods, pizzas were shaped like hearts, and pinked-out waiters with trays of chocolate covered strawberries filled with cheesecake made us break a rule: no dessert before dinner. what happens in new york stays in new york? we dined on incredible pasta, artichokes, and wonderful red wine. and, i actually got some sleep! yipee!!! i heart today.
nyfw day 5.
what a day, what a day. a strong first presentation: catherine malandrino. i wanted to snatch every look from that collection; the bold yet sophisticated tone rocked my world, and the white pillar gallery setting was all the more pleasing. charmed by the collection, charmed by the crowd. my heart was literally beating a bit faster as i anticipated my next show: calvin klein. this is a whole different caliber, and i must admit it weighed up to its expectations. p.s. there was a hottie front row: kellan lutz, joe jonas, and zac efron. not too shabby.mari and i strolled back to lincoln center, and by strolled i mean, hopped in a cab and recapped the season thus far. we concluded the up and comers as we dissected trends, colors, and fashion industry business (and maybe a few funny stories). happenings during fashion week are borderline insane, in the best of ways. we all dispersed to work and write, talk and write, eat and write, and then we made our way over to grand central station to see the production that was moncler. hmm…i have limited thoughts about this one, except i was so happy to have our almost entire crew together for the first time. i love them all to PIECES.we all scurried on over to lincoln center to catch zang toi, our sweet friend and OUTRAGEOUS designer. sitting with shannon to my left, errol to my right, and mari and elgene in front, we were anything but (not) trouble. the show was probably the most beautiful i have seen yet. truth: i had chills the entire time. common statement from errol: "OH MY STARS." sitting with my favorite hawaiian, blurting out my favorite models as they walked past, taking in the art of the couture quality constructions makes the show super uber-fun. energy was bursting from the seams; inspiration was hay wire. finale=standing O! i have yet to see this reaction (aka, zang is a masterpiece creator), and we are all begging him to join paris haute couture (pretty please!). backstage to hug and congratulate. is there a word stronger than bravo??watch the zang toi finale here: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFhVv5Si9Mo&w=480&h=390]late dinner at pj clark's with patti, shan, and diane. so so good to catch up with life long friends over lobster sandwiches and wine. off to the fun-filled company of mr. ryan cabrera, zac "highschool musical boy" efron, and kellan "twighlight" lutz. such a great night with them, especially when free style raps accompanied our cab rides. i wish girls could have that skill? (nicki minaj is a different story). let the good times roll...
